Stephen Profile

My name is Stephen. I was 62 years old when I was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2022. I had a partial colectomy and was declared cancer-free in 2023. This is my story.

Symptoms Blood in Toilet 1

I first experienced bleeding from the anus. I sought medical attention a few weeks later and was eventually diagnosed with stage 2 colon adenocarcinoma.

Emotions Confused Shock

When I first got my diagnosis, I was fearful and surprised. It was just a natural response.

Medical Care Surgery 4

I opted for a partial colectomy (removal of a part of the colon), as recommended by my doctor and based on my own research from books and the internet. I took pain medication as well. I was optimistic as I had confidence from the medical staff. I covered the treatment costs myself on top of subsidies.

I’ve since completed treatment and I was declared cancer-free in October 2023.

Side Effects Hair Loss 1

I struggled with hair loss and fatigue. I also lost lots of weight. I managed these through increased exercise and improved nutrition.

Side Effects Weight Loss 3

After treatment, I was very compliant with medical advice related to my alcohol intake, exercise frequency and smoking habits, but the biggest lifestyle adjustment was the change of diet. I lost lots of weight and it was hard to put weight on.

Moving on, I just want to live a long healthy life, as much as I can.

Lifestyle Continue Working

Just reading up on cancer information really helped me. My practical advice to others with cancer is to read up on everything first and seek medical advice.

Side Effects Lost Job 1

I faced challenges in my social life and relationships with loved ones and tried to cope by exercising, reading and having more social interactions.

I resigned from my job after finding out about my cancer as I had heart disease prior to the cancer diagnosis as well.

Biggest Fear Death 2

My biggest fear is that it might come back and I don’t know about it. I just hope and pray to be healthy for as long as I can.

Words Healing Recover 1

Now I feel optimistic since I’ve been reading lots of stuff on this subject.

Lifestyle Support 3

The most challenging aspect of being a cancer survivor is comparing myself with other cases of cancer. But try and be hopeful and optimistic, and get family support.
