Hi, my name is Nadia. This is my journey with cancer.
After throwing up blood at work, I was immediately taken to the hospital where I was eventually diagnosed with stage 3 stomach (gastric) cancer. Receiving this diagnosis left me sad and grief-stricken.
My doctors recommended me a treatment plan comprised of chemotherapy and pain medication. I've since completed active treatment.
Over 3 years ago, I threw up blood while at work and was immediately taken to the hospital. At the hospital, I was diagnosed with stage 3 gastric lymphoma.
Being diagnosed with cancer certainly left me reeling with sadness and grief. The news took me by surprise and I was confused by it all.
After receiving the diagnosis, my lifestyle changed in some ways. I exercised more regularly and adhered to a healthier diet.
Non-surgical Treatment:
- Chemotherapy
- Pain medication
These treatment options were recommendations made by my oncologist. I proceeded with her medical recommendations, after doing my own research too. Deciding on this treatment plan filled me with a sense of hope, motivation, and relief.
Some of the side effects that I struggled with over the course of treatment were fatigue, diarrhea and hair loss. To cope with these side effects, my doctors prescribed me some medication.
The most permanent adjustment I've made to my lifestyle since starting treatment is in terms of my nutrition and diet. More specifically, I've adopted a healthier diet that I adhere to daily. My plans going forward are to stay healthy and avoid any stress in life.
Another aspect of my life that has changed since my cancer diagnosis is my relationship with my children. While we've unfortunately had to stop going on our yearly family trips, we spend a lot more time together since learning about my cancer diagnosis.
Staying healthy enough to perform my holy pilgrimage is my biggest aspiration. I also yearn to see all my family and grandkids prosper and succeed in life.
So far in my cancer journey, I fear that I wouldn't be able to survive my ordeal with gastric cancer. I rely on prayer and drawing strength from my faith in my religion to overcome this fear of mine.
It's been some time since I was diagnosed with gastric cancer. Reflecting on my emotions today, I feel optimistic and hopeful for my future.
To all cancer patients: Do not give up. Fight your fears and maintain a positive mindset. Wishing you all the best on your journey!
