Hi, I’m Joanna.
I’m a breast cancer survivor and this is my story.
I found a lump in my breast while I was on my period. At the hospital, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer.
When I received my diagnosis, I was fearful and frightened. Feelings of insecurity, nervousness and worry overwhelmed me.
As of late 2023, it's been less than a year since my diagnosis. I have completed treatment and am no longer taking medication.
I now live free of cancer.
My symptoms
Less than a year since 2023, I discovered a lump in my breast during my period. I found this suspicious, and that prompted me to seek medical attention.
That's when I received a diagnosis of stage 3 breast cancer.
When I first received my diagnosis, I was so fearful and frightened.
I also felt inferior and insecure, and emotions of nervousness and worry overwhelmed me.
After receiving my diagnosis, I adjusted my lifestyle to prepare for treatment.
I completely cut out alcohol. This was a change; before my diagnosis, I had occasional, social drinks when I met my friends. Apart from alcohol intake, I adopted a healthier diet 3 to 5 days of the week and cut out processed food.
Initial Surgical Plan
- Lumpectomy, known as breast-conserving surgery
- Lymphadenectomy, the procedure for removal of lymph nodes
Non-surgical Treatment Option
All of the treatment options were recommended by my doctor.
I opted for,
- All of the doctor's treatment recommendations
As of now, I have completed treatment for cancer and am no longer taking medication.
I experienced a few side effects as a result of my treatment, such as hair loss and a loss of appetite. I also suffered a major stroke.
To cope with these side effects, I exercised more often and improved my nutrition intake.
I'm spending more quality time with my family and adopting a better lifestyle.
Since I began treatment, I've made a few adjustments to my lifestyle. For instance, I exercise more frequently and eat a healthier and more nutritious diet every day.
I'm looking forward to moving to a new place in the next 2 years too!
My biggest aspirations throughout my cancer journey were to survive breast cancer and spend quality time with my loved ones during this trying time.
My biggest fear was whether I would make it through.
I lost my aunt to cancer.
Throughout my journey to recovery, my biggest fears were whether I would make it through and what to do if the it (cancer) comes back. I tried my best not to think about it (these fears) and focus on living in the present.
Some time has passed since my cancer diagnosis. I still feel fearful, inferior, nervous and worried. But now, I am optimistic and feel thankful.
To others who are currently on their own cancer journey, my advice would be to take it one step at a time. As much as you can, take your time to process it all, from your diagnosis to your feelings, and don't rush.
